Tweedbank Rainbows Win Annual Bowhill Scarecrow Competition

15th October, 2013

A recycling inspired scarecrow created by the Tweedbank Rainbows was crowned the winner of Bowhill House and Country Estate’s best dressed scarecrow competition as part of its annual Harvest fun celebrations.

The Country Estate set a green theme in this Year of Natural Scotland, inspiring those who entered to become more eco-friendly.

All of the straw effigies that were put forward to take part in the competition were displayed along the Estate’s walking trail at the Harvest Festival at Bowhill, the Borders home of the Duke of Buccleuch, where the winner was decided by public vote.

Colourful scarecrow ‘Olivia’ created by Tweedbank Rainbows adopted a waste-not, want-not attitude and was a worthy winner in the eyes of the public. Tweedbank Rainbows received a generous £100 prize – double the amount that had been up for grabs in previous years.

Sarah Peat, Customer Services Manager at Bowhill House and Country Estate, said: “We had an amazing response from the local community this year and the calibre of each submission was absolutely outstanding.

“We would like to congratulate Tweedbank Rainbows on their fabulous scarecrow named ‘Olivia’; they certainly grasped the theme of the event making them truly deserving winners.”

The Harvest Festival was a huge success providing an excellent day out for the whole family to enjoy. Other fun events included a local ceilidh band that played in the courtyard as well as an exciting game of turnip bowling for everyone to join in.

Members of the public can explore the beautiful Bowhill House and Estate again in the new season set to launch in April next year.
