Telling Tales at Bowhill Theatre
6th October, 2015
Bowhill Theatre is set to play host to two enthralling theatrical performances this month, featuring stars from the small screen and tales for all the family.
Northumberland Theatre Company will make a welcome return to Bowhill on 8 October at 8pm with its latest play, ‘A Wife or the Gallows and other Telling Tales’, for family audiences.
Visitors are promised an evening of swashbuckling, sad, funny and bawdy tales linked by music and song in a ‘Canterbury Tales’ format, including ‘A Snowball in June’ and ‘Maggie’s Bannock’.
Five specially commissioned stories make up ‘A Wife or the Gallows and other Telling Tales’ as director Gillian Hambleton explains:
“These five stories are a collection of tales, history and ballads of the Borders and Northumberland, and are loosely based on ‘Wilson’s Tales of the Borders’ and other traditional folk tales.
“In a format not unlike the Canterbury Tales, we have woven them together in our own inimitable style to bring audiences of all ages an evening to delight, enchant and entertain with music, song and plenty of humour.”
Rapture Theatre celebrates Arthur Miller’s centenary with a production of one of the legendary playwright’s last great plays on 20 October 20at 8pm.
‘The Last Yankee’ reflects one of Miller’s themes of the devastating consequences for those who fail to achieve the mythical riches of The American Dream.
The cast includes Stewart Porter, well known from the BBC series ‘Shetland’ and more recently ‘River City’, and Jane McCarry, famously known for her role as ‘Isa’ in the Scottish classic ‘Still Game’.
Supported by Creative Scotland, Rapture Theatre is proud that ‘The Last Yankee’ will be part of the Scottish Mental Health Film and Theatre Festival 2015.
Tickets for both shows are £12; please note that booking is essential. (An optional pre-theatre supper will also be available at 6.30pm ahead of the 8th October show, costing £13.)
