Family frights as ghost tour returns to Bowhill this Halloween
15th October, 2015
Bowhill’s ghastly ghost tours return this Halloween after the spooky success of last year’s event.
Two nights of fiendish family fun will take place, and visitors young and old can expect to find lots of chills and thrills as they explore the Estate.
Once the gates close, a storyteller will guide visitors through the grounds by torchlight, offering spine-chilling stories from Bowhill’s past.
A local re-enactment group will bring history to life as they tell tales of some of the unusual happenings surrounding the Scotts of Buccleuch and the magical Borderland long ago. These include the stories of:
- Red Cap the Goblin – a Border goblin rumoured to haunt ruined castles. He has claws for hands, wears heavy iron boots and wears a red hat/scarf which he dips in blood!
- Michael Scott the Wizard – a philosopher at the Court of the Holy Roman Emperor who, according to legend, was buried at Melrose Abbey
- Kinmont Willie – who was arrested and taken in chains and imprisoned in Carlisle Castle, breaching a truce and causing outrage on the Scottish side of the border – but was later freed by “Bold Buccleuch” (Walter Scott) who headed a party of 80 men who either overpowered or bribed the guards.
Sound and lighting will add to the atmosphere as guests wander through the grounds meeting the ghosts of Bowhill’s past.
Helen Currie, House and Events Manager at Bowhill, said: “Our Halloween event last year proved to be extremely popular so we’re very excited to host some ghoulish goings on once again.
“Our ghost walks are great fun for all the family and offer the chance to find out more about the spookier side of Bowhill’s history, while exploring the creepy nooks and crannies of the grounds here.
“Visitors should come along on the night prepared for an outdoor walk – so waterproofs, wellies and torches are recommended. Not to mention a fearless disposition!”
The Bowhill Haunted Halloween tours will run on 30 and 31 October with three tours each evening – at 6pm, 7.15pm and 8.30pm.
Tickets are £9 for adults, £6 for children (suitable for age 3 upwards) and family tickets can be purchased for £28. Tickets must be booked in advance.
