Bowhill House opens its doors for August tours
7th August, 2019
History buffs from the Borders and beyond can delve into the fascinating heritage, art and architecture of Bowhill and the Buccleuch family with a guided House tour this August.
Bowhill House & Grounds is the magnificent Scottish Borders home of the Duke of Buccleuch and, for limited periods throughout the year, he opens his doors for visitors of all ages to uncover a piece of Scottish history.
Led by passionate experts, the tours last approximately one hour and are the perfect opportunity to explore the Victorian home within a Georgian House and see up close some of the internationally-renowned Buccleuch Art Collection on display.
The collection housed within Bowhill includes masterworks by Canaletto, Raeburn, Reynolds and Gainsborough. Visitors can also see an exhibition of Buccleuch’s jewel-like portrait miniature collection as well as rare Victorian artefacts in the ‘Love and Respect in the Victorian Age Exhibition’ following a House tour.
This stunning collection tells the story of Walter Francis Montagu Douglas Scott, 5th Duke of Buccleuch and Lady Charlotte-Anne Montagu Douglas Scott. Many of the items on display in the exhibition were personal gifts between the pair, including an array of ‘objects of virtue’.
Rory Powell, House Manager at Bowhill House and Grounds, said: “A tour of Bowhill House is the chance to look within a hidden treasure of the Scottish Borders and brings history to life. Visitors can step back in time touring the drawing room, dining room and reimagined Smoking Room to name a few.
“We urge visitors to book in advance so as not to miss out on this limited opportunity to see beyond the front door of Bowhill House.”
Entry to Bowhill House for a tour costs £11 for adults, £10 for concessions, £6 for children aged 3-16, free for under 3s and £30 for a family pass including up to two adults and two children. Payment for Bowhill House tour also grants visitor access to the wider grounds.
The Pay Once Scheme means that visitors can return to Bowhill throughout the season for no additional charge.
Bowhill House is open for tours 1-31 August and 26-27 October with the grounds and exhibition open daily throughout August and open Friday to Sunday 1-29 September.
Advance booking for House Tours in August and October is recommended to avoid disappointment.
