Fairy training and May Day fun bring magical activities to Bowhill

2nd May, 2018

A Victorian May Day Fayre, an enchanting ‘fairy training’ course, talks and tours form just part of Bowhill’s packed May activity schedule.

The popular Heritage Talk series continues on 4th May and takes a look at the hidden meanings and secrets found within some of the Buccleuch collection paintings on display at the House with Helen Currie, House Manager.

On 6th May, thrill seekers can try their hand at archery as Barons Folly Archers visit the Estate to offer sessions, with tutoring available for both experienced archers and novices.

Meanwhile younger visitors can enjoy a performance of Oscar’s Amazing Space Adventure from the Mousetail puppets in Bowhill Theatre. The space-themed show is part of this year’s Borders Science Festival.

On bank holiday Monday (7th May) Bowhill will host a Victorian fayre to celebrate ‘May Day in its Hey Day’. There will be lots of vintage fun and games, including hook a duck, tin can alley, skittles and a Punch and Judy show.

Visitors can also explore the ‘Love and Respect in the Victorian Age’ exhibition and enjoy a tour of the House where they’ll find out more about how a Georgian mansion was transformed in the Victorian era.

Early birds will have the chance to take in the spectacular sights of the Estate at sunrise during a Sunrise Wildlife Watch on 16th May with Bowhill’s Ranger, followed by a delicious cooked breakfast in the Minstrel Tearoom.

Wannabe fairies can visit Bowhill for fun-filled sessions of magic and spells with The Fairy Godmother. The ‘Fairy Training’ offers the chance to make potions, wishes and spells with youngsters receiving a special certificate. Sessions take place on 26th and 27th May.

Rory Powell, Countryside Learning & Engagement Ranger at Bowhill, said: “There’s lots of superb activities to enjoy at the Estate this month.

“Many of the events celebrate the fascinating history of Bowhill, with the chance to take a closer looks at some of our paintings during the Heritage Talk and step back in time during our May Day celebrations.

“While others focus on the beautiful scenery and wildlife of the Estate, including the Sunrise Wildlife Watch.

“No matter which activities take your fancy, come along and get set to let your imagination run wild.”
