Bowhill’s gardens inspire local school project
3rd October, 2016
Pupils from St Margaret’s Primary School in Hawick visited Bowhill House and Country Estate earlier this year for a tour of the gardens which inspired the design of their very own produce garden thanks to the help of the Bowhill Rangers.
The Ranger Service from the Estate, have been working closely with the local school children in the design and development of their garden. While support and guidance with the layout and practical building elements of the landscape have come from the Bowhill Ranger Service the Bowhill Gardens team have supplied plants for the project.
Rangers led sessions for the kids to plan their basic designs before assisting with the install of main features including building a path and constructing raised beds for plants and produce.
The St Margaret’s pupils planted vegetables, bedding plants and pruned fruit trees during spring, then nurtured the gardens growth throughout the season.
Rory Powell, Learning & Engagement Ranger at Bowhill, said: “It has been a real joy to work with St Margaret’s Primary on this fantastic project and it was great to hear that Bowhill’s own gardens helped to inspire the project.
“All the school children were really engaged with all elements of the project and it has been great to see the garden progress with the pupils’ hard work and dedication.
“In the new school year we are continuing to work on the project to help the pupils develop the garden even further.”
