Make your own Games Time Gummidge at Bowhill

28th July, 2014

The annual Harvest Festival and scarecrow competition will make a welcome return to Bowhill House and Country Estate for the fifth year running.

Once again, the team at Bowhill are searching for the best dressed scarecrows from across the Borders, with a £50 prize in the group category and a £50 prize for the best family/individual entry.

Local people and organisations are being called on to make a start on their entries, this year incorporating a Commonwealth Games theme.

All tattie-bogles will be available to view at the Harvest Festival which will take place at Bowhill, the Borders home of the Duke of Buccleuch, on Sunday 21st September, from 11am to 4pm.

The winning straw characters will be decided by public vote at the Harvest Festival, which is fast becoming a tradition in the region. During the event visitors can also enjoy plenty of family entertainment and activities.

Helen Currie, House and Events Manager at Bowhill, said: “Last year the scarecrow competition attracted lots of impressive entries from the local community and we’re hoping this year will be even better.

“Everyone is feeling the buzz of the Commonwealth Games which I’m sure will rub off on our entries. The scarecrows could be dressed in Commonwealth colours or in the theme of a particular sport, athlete or country.

She added: “The Harvest Festival has always been a really enjoyable day with fun for all the family. It also offers a last chance to explore the beautiful Bowhill House and gardens before season closes at the end of September.”

In the run-up to the September festival, youngsters can make the most of the rest of the school holidays by taking part in the last of the Holiday Club activities, suitable for children aged eight years and over.

Den building on August 6th will give children the chance to put their survival skills to the test by constructing their own woodland shelter, while Yew’ve Been Framed on August 13th gives visitors time to get creative by constructing their own woodland picture frame.

And on August 10th, families will be able to explore the woodlands of Bowhill using different senses than they might normally use.

Also making sure August is action-packed are talented team at Love Science, who will deliver their final fun and practical science workshops for children of all ages on the 1st and 8th of the month.
