Bowhill welcomes the HandleBards
21st June, 2013
4 ACTORS, 4 BICYCLES, 40 CHARACTERS AND A 926 MILE UK ADVENTURE
In a world-first project, theatre company Peculius will perform one of Shakespeare’s greatest plays during a stop at Bowhill House & Country Estate as part of a cycling tour from Glasgow to London.
On July 8, visitors to the Estate can expect an evening of high-octane drama, cunning schemes, love sickness and cross-dressing, when the four-strong male troupe of travelling players known as the ‘HandleBards’ presents their rendition of Romeo & Juliet.
Making their performance truly unique, the HandleBards will perform with only what they can carry – meaning they will make the 926mile journey carrying their set, props, costumes, camping equipment and more on their bikes.
With no back-up vehicle to support them, the HandleBards will cover a distance equivalent to that between Land’s End and John o’ Groats.
The performance at Bowhill starts at 6.30pm, taking place outdoors if the weather stays dry, or indoors at the Estate’s theatre if wet.
Helen Currie, House and Events Manager at Bowhill House and Country Estates, said: “We are delighted to welcome the HandleBards in what will be an exciting and unique performance of one of Shakespeare’s most renowned pieces of work.
“The quartet are setting themselves a huge challenge but reviews of the show and previous performances from Peculius speak for themselves. We would urge anyone interested in the shows to book tickets as soon as possible as it is expected to generate lots of interest from across the region”.
“We are delighted to be amongst just a handful of venues across the UK to be part of the HandleBards world-first tour and look forward to experiencing the spectacular next month.”
Tickets are priced at £12, £10 for concessions.
As well as visiting Bowhill House, the group will tour through a further 24 heritage venues across Scotland and England.
